The Difference Between Traditional Lighting and LEDs

Fluorescent Lighting
Fluorescent or metal halide lighting all come with a filament through which electricity is conducted. The filament is surrounded by a hazardous gas with energy being released as heat and light. Eventually, the filament burns out.

Light emitting diodes (LED)
Light emitting diodes (LED) on the other hand will conduct electricity through a semiconductor which almost entirely converts to light with very little heat loss. The amount of wasted energy is substantially reduced compared to traditional lighting.

Most LED bulbs come with a five-year warranty.
They have a longer lifespan than other forms of lighting and use approximately 75% less energy than traditional lighting.
LED bulbs can last approximately 50,000 to 80,000 hours, which is close to 20 years of uninterrupted lighting.
According to EnergyStar.gov LED lighting lasts 35 to 50 times longer for incandescent and 2 to 5 times longer than fluorescents.
Though costing more initially, LEDs provide long-term cost saving.
An estimated 60-85% drop in lighting bills, promoting longer product use and increased financial savings.

Safety First

Traditional light bulbs vs LED bulbs

Traditional light bulbs

Need to be to be handled with so much care because a broken piece can cause problems for users.
Compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) contain around five milligrams of toxic mercury, which can cause brain damage.
A broken CFL can cause mercury vapour to be released into the air – causing surroundings to become dangerous.
Startling difference in illumination - traditional lighting tends to cause shadows which will not be conducive for businesses that require detail work like garment factories or workshops.

LED bulbs

LEDs, besides being safer to use, provide uniform light so that every part of the area is evenly lit.
Helps in the colour dispersion as well so that colours are more vivid.
Can be made to simulate daylight conditions which may be required by certain business operations, e.g., art galleries.
